What's in a name?

Matthew 1:18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. The last name that we will look at for Jesus this Christmas season is the name Christ. The name Christ means “anointed one”, and it is has the same meaning as the title Messiah does in the Old Testament. This verse gives the full title of Jesus Christ, which states that this little child that was born was God’s anointed Deliverer of sin for all people. It was this title of Christ that caused so the Pharisees so hate Jesus so much because they knew that if He was truly the prophesied Christ that was foretold that their time as the spiritual rulers in Israel is over. The Pharisees always assumed that the coming Messiah would be like they were and would not be a champion of the common people and a redeemer of sinners. This title of Christ meant that Mary would see this little child grow up and do miracles that had never been seen before. It meant that she would see Him teach in preach with great authority in a manner that had never been seen before. It also meant that she would see Him face an agony and a hatred that had also never been seen before. In order for Jesus to bear the sin all people for all time He would have to endure the greatest sacrifice that has ever been given. The title of Christ mean that she would have to watch her child die a terrible death. But, this title of Christ also means that she would see Him again. This title of Christ meant that death could not hold Him in the grave but that He would rise from the dead after three days. While the sadness of knowing that this little child would one day be the perfect sacrifice for both her sin and the sin of the world, she also knew the joy that would come from His victory over sin, death, and the grave. As Mary looked into the eyes of this Christ child it gave her hope. She knew that the suffering that He would endure would bring hope to all mankind. The birth of Jesus Christ was the birth of hope. This Christmas season is a time of spiritual hope for all peoples. The greatest gift that a person can ever receive is the hope that God offers to those who call upon His Son Jesus Christ. The hope that God offers to sinners is not the wishful thinking that we think of with hope, but it is the confident expectation that God can indeed save the sinner from an eternity and Hell and deliver them from their sin and make them the eternal child of God. This is the hope that is offered this Christmas season and it is the greatest gift that could ever be offered.
